On Sunday, I shared a message with Rock Harbor Church from Psalm 1:1-4. I have been continually thinking about the principle in verse 2 about delighting in the law.
Psalm 1:2 “but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night.”
In order for us to delight in the law, we certainly have to understand its role in our lives. And to understand it, we must first meditate and study it. And to meditate on it, we must first read it.
To many, the bible seems like an outdated book meant to guide the ancients, with little relevance to us. For others, there is so much to be learned from the ancients as they mentor us in the ways of God. First, we must engage with them. This is where the difficulty often lies. How do you get something meaningful out of something written in a different language and culture so long ago?
I started to SOAP. It’s not something I came up with on my own, but something I’ve been reading about for awhile now. As I have put it into practice, I’ve begun to have a clearer understanding of what God is try to reveal and teach me. Here’s the process…
S—select a small section or single verse of Scripture and read through it multiple times
O—make an Observation or two. What really jumps out at you?
A—ask God for an area where you can Apply the passage to your life.
P—write out a short Prayer based on what you have learned.
The final question each day…
How will I live differently today because of what I just read?
Give it a try and let me know what you think.
